Artist’s Statement

Art is my way of confronting myself. Someone famous once said that she writes to find out what she’s thinking. I paint to do that. Art has the power to make one see things in a new light. It allows us to recover memories and to rework and heal from past trauma. It encourages us to develop a love for places and things that we would otherwise not have noticed or thought beautiful, such as decaying trees, swamps and mud. When I am ‘in the zone” I am able to use art to transcend to a higher dimension of consciousness. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, philosophy, science, literature, dreams and family history, often my painting will lead to metaphysical explorations. My newest series, Nature and Memory, explores the interaction of memory and the concept of time.I have exhibited nationally since 1990. Since 1994 I’ve also worked as a freelance illustrator for a variety of clients in the pharmaceutical, psychiatric, medical and book publishing industries. I’ve won several awards, and my work has been the subject of reviews in prominent newspapers, including the Orange County Register, and the Los Angeles Times.

I earned a BA from California State University at Long Beach ( magna cum laude) and did graduate work at the University of California at Irvine, and at California State University at Fullerton.
